Q:  Who taught you to read?

I always loved books from a very early age and being read to, I'll have to say I was probably a self taught reader.

Daniel Armand - Adam Orser: Chronicles of Evolution - Spotlight

About the Book

Adam Orser: The Chronicles of Evolution

Book One in the Adam Orser Trilogy

A visitor in the celestial realm of interdimensional communication

Adam Orser seems to be a regular guy, leading a fairly successful life in Toronto as a psychologist with a loving girlfriend, Jazmin.

But there is nothing ordinary about Adam.

Fate interrupts his planned marriage proposal, and a serious car accident thrusts him into a metaphysical reality behind a deep coma that holds his physical body in check. Through an advanced system of training and evolution created by the celestial realm, Adam is called to a dangerous mission with profound implications for the world he knows, and life and death consequences for one missing nine-year old girl, who is no ordinary kidnapped child. Fantastical forces are at work on both sides of the veil between the world we recognize and those yet to be discovered.

Destiny compels Adam to freely choose the part he will play in a no-limits competition between good and evil. Questions of existence, causality, and truth converge as Adam struggles to find his way back to Jazmin and a life that will never be the same.

Excerpt

Chapter 2
The Proposition

"It’s gonna rain,” I said, looking out and up from my fourth-story office window in the Clemensdale Professional building. I was beginning to get a little “steamy” under the collar, primarily because I was not in the best of moods; but also, I had the morbid sensation that my life was very quickly heading nowhere. Apart from that, the erratic weather was going to ruin the outing Jazmin and I had planned. To be more precise, the Ontario Place visit, which Carly anxiously anticipated.

“Beatrice, do we have any more appointments scheduled for today?”

“No, Doctor, Mrs . Palmiero called and canceled her son’s four-thirty appointment.”

Naturally I thought. Why waste time and effort on a useless remedy? If Albert wasn’t ready to put away his childhood and begin accepting the challenges of adulthood, his world would still revolve around Power Rangers and Loony Tunes at sixteen or sixty-one. It’s not like I hadn’t tried reaching him. Lord knows, I’d practically exhausted my means. It’s just that every time I managed to get closer to him, he took a quick step back and built another wall defending the spot where he left behind.

“Beatrice, is Mr Towanna still scheduled for tomorrow?”

“Towanka. Yes, Doctor, he’s still scheduled for his nine o’clock.”

“Thank you, Beatrice.”

Marcel Towanka, twenty-one years old, and a construction worker by trade, was half French-Canadian, half Native Indian. He came to me one day with a very interesting proposition. According to this self-proclaimed “Dragon Chaser,” once, under the influence of drugs that helped him to “psychically travel,” he encountered a tribal ancestor known as a shaman. The grim elder warned Marcel of the dangerous path he had chosen. The shaman severely pointed out how their race was on the verge of extinction, and the young man’s negative conduct was helping to speed up the burn of their long-rooted heritage and proud millennial traditions.

That’s when this young native came to see me. He literally begged me to help him get reacquainted with his lost traits. It’s been nearly four months now since our first meeting, and I am proud—no, that’s not the right word—I am thrilled that Marcel Towanka has not consumed anything more stimulating than aspirin, or drunk anything more relaxing than herbal tea, for over two months now. As for his heritage, Marcel attends religious ceremonial rituals held biweekly on sacred conservation grounds, as well as taking part in Native Indian arts and crafts.

It is said that when a man’s future looks shaded with gloom, he should attempt turning over a new leaf. The way I see it, this young man, armed only with native courage and fueled entirely with compassion, had managed to turn over an entire season. Regarding my role in his quest for spiritual freedom, all I can say is that he is the artist, the master who, day by day, piece by piece, painstakingly chipped away at his monumental totem pole, in honor of the great warriors of the past and the ones yet to come. I, his humble assistant, merely swept away all the flying dirt and debris, clearing the path for all those who wish to come and see the work of a genius.

My time with Marcel is quickly coming to an end; although this man wishes to continue therapy, and I equally wish to continue to help him. I must honor him and let him go, for he no longer needs my help. Ironic though as it may seem, he never really did.

The Angel Chronicles, Book 1
by Amy Lignor

How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.

Vanessa Morgan - A Good Man - Author Interview

Author Interview

1. Who is your favorite character?
My favorite character in A Good Man is definitely the old, arthritic vampire Louis Caron.

2. Why is he/she your favorite?
Because we might recognize a lot of ourselves and others in Louis - especially his insecurities and feelings of guilt. Louis is also quite original as we don't usually see old, Botoxed vampires with arthritis.

3. How did you come to create him/her?
In 2010, my short story The Strangers Outside was brought to the screen. The main actor in that film, Pierre Lekeux, is also a producer. He loved what I had done with The Strangers Outside and he asked if I’d agree to write their next feature film. He wanted to jump onto the wagon of the current vampire-craze and he thought that I was the ideal person to bring this project to life. The only directions I had were that it had to be about a vampire and that I had to write it with certain actors in mind. I imagined what these actors would be like if they were vampires and what their worst fate would be.

4. When did he/she first enter your mind?
Louis Caron, was obviously based on Pierre Lekeux, the actor who is going to play the part in the movie adaptation. I observed him in real life and in his interactions with women and it really helped me in creating an original vampire character. I particularly loved the idea of an old vampire who suffers from arthritis and insecurities and who thinks that having a good reason for sinful behavior makes everything ok.

5. Where was he/she given life in the creative process?
A Good Man is a character driven story, so everything started and evolved with Louis.

6. What do you like the most about him/her and what do you dislike the most about him/her?
A lot of people see Louis Caron as a monster because he's a vampire and has to kill, but if you look at who he really is, you notice that he is a better man than most people we know. Most of us kill animals, because we like the taste of it. Louis kills people because he doesn't have a choice (if he doesn't drink the blood of humans, he will live eternally in a plant-like state). Louis is very much aware of what is good and what is not and he tries to make the best choices whenever he can. That's something we can't say about most humans.

About the Book

Do you like Dexter and American Psycho? Then chances are you will love A Good Man.

Louis Caron is a good man – he's a vegetarian, feeds homeless people, takes care of animals and is converned with the ecological well-being of the planet. But his altruism has a sinister edge – he's a vampire and local detective Taglioni becomes increasingly suspicious of him. Louis' attempt to escape the police will take him on a journey into his own private hell where he is not only forced to confront his worst fears, but where he will also destroy the lives of those he cares about.

Linda Armstrong Miller - Betrayal and Forgiveness - Author Interview

Author Interview

1. Who is your favorite character?
Sam Rivers

2. Why is he/she your favorite?
Well, it’s easy to love Zach; he’s a teenage who has been hurt and fears for the life of all the adults in his family. He also has the most to come to terms with so you can’t help but love him. Lisa is lovable too. She’s smart, quirky yet brave and strong. She refuses to compromise what she believes in. Then there is Sam. We all know the dilemmassingle mothers go through. We hear about it all the time but we don’t hear much about single dads. Is it because they do the job better than women or are there just so few of them. I think of course it is the latter but they are out there. Sam’s my favorite because in the beginning you aren’t going to like him but he is like any parent. He wants to protect his family. His character is real. He makes real decision and yes they may come back to bite him on the butt but he did it all out of love. He thought he would be able to keep his promise but human nature got in the way. I would really think less of him had it not. That being said I also feel for Lisa. She did keep her promise and she was hurt not once but twice. It’s a hard thing to do.

3. How did you come to create him/her?
I’m a people watcher. Prior to going to nursing school I worked as a counselor for children and teenagers. A lot of parents decide to handle the issue in Betrayal and Forgiveness as Sam did. It rarely turns out with a happy ending for the child.

4. When did he/she first enter your mind?
I start all my books off by making a list of people I want in the book. Sam was the first person I had on the list. It’s a family. There has to be a mom and dad before there can be children. It’s not like the chicken and egg question; to have children there must be parents.

5. Where was he/she given life in the creative process?
Sam was given life when I realized the book carried better with Sally in heaven and Sam life to carry on without her.

6. What do like the most about him/her and what do you dislike the most about him/her?
I like that he is real. I like that he was madly in love with his wife. I don’t like that he didn’t try to find out what really happened to his wife until he had all but destroyed his relationship with Lisa.

Book Summary

In the Bible, the Lord asked that we not make promises unless we are sure that we can keep them. Lisa made a promise and has done everything in her power to keep that promise. a lesson her father needed to learn. Before he was able to practice keeping his promise, he lost the love of his daughter, his best friend, and he was about to lose the love of his son. Time was running out for all of them, but they didn’t know it.

Knee Deep
by Jolene Perry

“Blanketopia.”

My heart jumps, and I spin to face him. That’s a me and Mindy thing. “How do you know about that?”

“You and Mindy used to keep some sort of notebook, and you guys told me.” He sits with his back against the couch, crossing his legs, making full use of the blankets and pillows spread out on the floor.

My chest tightens. This can’t be. No one knows about the notebook. “We told you about the notebook?” I wonder if I’ll be able to swallow my bagel?

He takes a big bite. “Yeah, but you never let me look at it.”

Kaitlyn Davis - Simmer - Author Interview

Author Interview

1. Who is your favorite character?
So tough! I definitely fell in love with my two leading men, but I have to say my main character Kira has got to be my favorite!

2. Why is he/she your favorite?
I really wanted to create a strong, relatable female lead and I think I did that in Kira. She is thrown so many curveballs and her life is turned completely upside down, but she manages to keep it together and persevere. I love a girl who can kick some ass and doesn’t let the boys fight her battles!

3. How did you come to create him/her?
I was actually walking on the beach one day, basking in the sun, when I started to think about how cool it would be to create a paranormal being that was somehow connected to the sun. So, I first toyed with the idea of this new species and then different plot ideas came to me. Soon enough Kira popped into my head! I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll stop there!

4. When did he/she first enter your mind?
Initially, I thought of Kira just as a girl with this amazing power. But soon enough, she blossomed into so much more. I really wanted a main character who would let me explore a ton of different themes – forbidden love, fierce friendship, complete loss and absolute power, to name a few. Kira is put through the ringer in my books, and as the series continues, she will become more self-assured and more powerful.

5. Where was he/she given life in the creative process?
In the beginning of Ignite, Kira is a girl just like any other – new to school, looking for friends and curious about a boy she is crushing on. For me, her character really came to life when she discovers her powers. Her personality really stands out as she struggles to cope with her new life and learns about herself in the process.

6. What do like the most about him/her and what do you dislike the most about him/her?
I already said I love her strength, but I admire her faith as well. She believes in people – both her friends and her love interest – and really wants to see the best in those she loves. As for something I dislike… it’s so hard to choose! I don’t think there is anything I personally dislike about her, but her weakness is probably her stubbornness – once an idea or plan enters her mind, she won’t change it for anyone! Sometimes that gets her in trouble, but other times it makes her unstoppable.
